The label was formed by Becca McCharen and Emily Kappes in 2008. Their debut runway show was held in Lynchburg, Virginia.[1][2] In 2010, designer Becca McCharen relocated the label to its current headquarters in New York City while co-founder Emily Kappes became less involved in order to focus on her architecture career.
Chromat looks are described as featuring strong architectural undertones in each collection and also pull from inspiration as varied as building scaffolding and body builders.
The designers Becca McCharen and Emily Kappes met while studying architecture at the University of Virginia School of Architecture. "Architecture school was very process oriented,” says McCharen. “We did a lot of research about the context of a building before we designed it. We made many iterations of a single idea and then we edited them. And that is exactly what we do with our clothing designs." [3] Drawing from their combined theoretical backgrounds in architecture and urban design, Chromat focuses on structural experiments for the human body.
Chromat garments have been worn by Nicki Minaj, Eve, Kelly Rowland, Jessica Chastain [1], Kim Kardashian, Ladyfag, Kat Graham, Nicole Scherzinger [2], dancers for Usher and have been featured in print magazines such as Vogue Italia, Nylon, Zink, XXL, Faint Magazine, Time Out, Fiasco [3], Elle Belgium, Marie Claire China and Blink and online on Glamour [4], The Cut, Coco Perez [5], Iconique [6] and High Snobette.
Chromat garments are available at numerous boutiques in the US and Asia including Barneys New York, Patricia Fields, Oak and International Playground [7] in New York City, and The Olive Shoppe [8], Stanton James and Le Bra Lingerie in Los Angeles.
