The municipality covers an area of 12.87 square kilometres (4.97 sq mi), and has a population of 4,402 (as at 28 August 2006).
Chlumec lies approximately 9 kilometres (6 mi) north-west of Ústí nad Labem and 76 km (47 mi) north-west of Prague.
In 1813, Battle of Kulm took place here.
