- Chips and salsa
-
Chips and Salsa[1] is a weekly gathering of the graduate students, faculty, and staff of the Earth and Planetary Sciences department at the University of California Santa Cruz. Held every Friday at 5:00pm, Chips and Salsa (C&S) is a time for invitees to stop working, relax, and eat some delicious tortilla chips and zesty salsa.
C&S is held in a not-so-secret location aptly named “The Knuckle.” The Knuckle is in the A-wing of the Earth and Marine Sciences building on the first floor and is sometimes referred to as the “Dreiss Lobby.” Against a backdrop of majestic Redwoods soaring hundreds of feet into the air, attendees of C&S can revel in their awesomeness and swap stories of triumph over foes such as coding errors, contaminated samples, corrupted datasets, and problem sets that simply don’t seem to have a solution.
The wonderful thing about C&S is that most are welcome, so see you this Friday at 5:00pm at the Knuckle.
In popular culture
Chips and Salsa has been cited in popular culture a number of times over the years. Most recently, C&S has been referenced in comics, poetry, and film.[2]
