The airbase is situated close to the coast and has a long runway which is believed to be able to handle most modern aircraft. Established by the British as RAF China Bay in the 1920s, the base was attacked by the Japanese during World War II.
During the time the Indian Peace Keeping Force was in Sri Lanka, China Bay Airport had to operate a number of Indian aircraft including IL-76s. This based played a vital role in government's war operation against Tamil Tigers, which lasted for almost 30 years.
In addition to the military facilities, there are sport complexes attached to the Air Force base. [1]
