Geography

Cherek is fairly mountainous. The interior of the country is too rough for the development of cities, and as such the only inhabitants live in small villages. The coast is less rocky, however, allowing the construction of cities. Guarding the entrance to the Gulf of Cherek is the Bore, a channel of whirlpools that are only passable by Cherek Warships.[2]

History

Early years

Cherek was originally part of the Kingdom of Aloria, but after the recovery of the Orb in 2000, King Cherek Bear Shoulders was forced to divide his kingdom to protect the Orb. The part that he kept for himself was named Cherek in his honor.[3]

Due to an old alliance between the Alorn god, Belar and the Marag god Mara, when the Tolnedrans destroyed Maragor, Belar told the Chereks to plunder the coasts of Tolnedra, starting a series of raids against Tolnedra. These didn't end until 2537, when the Chereks began to suffer defeats at the hands of the legions.

In the year 3150, a Cherek earl sacked the Eratian city of Darine, angering Polgara, the Duchess of Erat. She traveled to Val Alorn to talk with the king, Alreg. During the discussion, Polgara grew fed up with Alreg's manners and temporarily transformed him into a toad.[4]

War with Nyissa

In the year 4002, the Queen of Nyissa, Salmissra, assassinated the King of Riva, and the Alorns declared war in anger. In a one year period, the Alorns, including the Chereks, laid waste to the country and nearly exterminated the people. The Chereks wanted to continue the war and attack the rest of the West, but the other Alorns went home, so the outnumbered Chereks were forced to go back as well.[5]

The war years

During the war with the Angaraks (4865-4875), the Chereks assisted in helping the Drasnians escape the onslaught of Kal Torak's forces. For the most part, however, the Chereks had a fairly minor role. At the Battle of Vo Mimbre, the Cherek fleet ferried the Tolnedran Legions to the battlefield, and took part in the assault on the right flank.

The Belgariad and the Malloreon

During the year 5369, the Earl of Jarvik, with assistance from Asharak the Murgo, tried to kill King Anheg and assume the throne, but Garion discovered the plot and warned the King, and Jarvik was executed for treason.[6]

Later, in 5371, the Chereks took part in the attack on Thull Mardu and put a fleet in the Sea of the East, cutting Mallorea's supply lines.[7]

In the year 5380, the Chereks also helped in Belgarion's war against the Bear-Cult, and the first engagement of the war takes place in Cherek at Jarviksholm. After Prince Geran of Riva is kidnapped, the Chereks search their kingdom for the child, thinking the Bear-Cult has him.[8]

Cherek was one of the countries represented in the Accords of Dal Perivor.
