Cheggying

Cheggying

The term Cheggying refers to the recreational activity of collecting horse chestnuts during the Autumn months. This involves using a stick (a Cheggying stick), to hit the tree branches, causing the chestnuts to dislodge and fall to the ground, to then be collected. It is a colloquial term, of unknown origin, used almost exclusively in the North Nottinghamshire/South Yorkshire area of England.

Example: "Now then Father, shall we go cheggying this afternoon?" To which the reply could be: "Aye lad, I'll just fetch me hat and stick."
