- Charlotte Buff
-
Charlotte Buff (11 January 1753, Wetzlar – 16 January 1828) was known to be a love interest of Goethe, whom she rejected to marry the diplomat and art collector Johann Christian Kestner. She mirrors in the central character Lotte of the masterpiece "The Sorrows of Young Werther" of Goethe, in which this extended certain moments of suffering in his relationship to her.[1][2] Her encounter with the poet was characterized by heartiness and unconstraint; Goethe bought the wedding rings for her and Kestner, in Frankfurt am Main.[2] Charlotte Kestner bore her husband four daughters and eight sons, among them August Kestner.
