Charles John Semowich, artist, musician, author, curator, historian, was born October 10, 1949.

  • Bachelor of Arts from the University at Binghamton
  • Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Catholic University in Washington DC
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from International College in Los Angeles.

He has also received training from the University of Vermont, Woodstock School of Art, and others.

Artistic achievements

Charles has had his art work exhibited nationally, at events and locations such as SPAR National Art Exhibition in Shreveport, LA, 36th National Cooperstown, the Print Club of Albany and others. His work is currently in many collections, such as Newark Public Library, Print club of Albany, University at Binghamton, and others.

  • Current curator for the Print Club of Albany and City Historian for the City of Rensselaer, NY.
  • The executive director at the Albany Center Galleries from 2004 to 2005.[1]
  • Served as a judge for the art of the Albany Tulip Festival and others.
  • Served on the Advisory Council for the Society of American Graphic Artists.

Musical achievements

Charles is well known as a carillonneur. He studied carillon at the University of Michigan and privately with George Matthew, Jr. He plays the carillon at Albany City Hall Carillon[2] and has given concerts throughout the northeast including at Riverside Church and Yale University. He has performed at the inaugurations of New York State Governors and special events such as the New York State 911 Memorial Remembrance Ceremony[3] and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Holiday.

Publications

His original music has been published by Fenwick Parva Press. His book, American Furniture Craftsman Working prior to 1920: An Annotated Bibliography was published by Greenwood Press.[4] He has written many articles and other publications. Three articles by him appear in the Grove Dictionary of Art.
