History

Certes Networks was founded by Michael Doss and Dennis Toothman in 2000. Originally funded from a Lucent Technologies grant, the company’s initial focus was on encrypting high-speed fiber optic links. Through the 2000s the company expanded its offering to other Layer 2 (Ethernet) and Layer 3 (IP) technologies. In 2006 the company released the CipherEngine solution, the industry’s first purpose built policy and key manager for network-wide encryption. In 2009 Certes Networks added the ability to support Layer 4 (TCP/UDP), allowing service providers to secure data while preserving netflow and traffic shaping capabilities. In July 2009 Thomas J. Gill (formerly the CEO of FORE systems) was named Chairman and CEO of Certes Networks.
