Biography
Estrada studied painting under Miguel Moreno, and after 1942 under Raúl Anguiano, Feliciano Peña and José Chávez Morado at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda" in Mexico City. After Antonio M. Ruiz became director of the "La Esmeralda", Estrada became student of Frida Kahlo.[1] He was also taught by Diego Rivera. In 1946 he finished his studies of painting. Together with Guillermo Monroy and Arturo García Bustos he founded the Artistas Jóvenes Revolucionarios, an association of "young revolutionary artists". Estrada belonged to the last students of Frida Kahlo, and was one of the four so-called "Fridos",[2] who painted the mural "Pulquería Posada del Sol" with her.
After 1948, he taught at the "La Esmeralda". Also in 1948, he assisted José Clemente Orozco at his mural at the Escuela Normal de Maestros, from 1951 to 1952 he assisted Diego Rivera at his works at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario,a dn in 1953 he assisted Juan O'Gorman at his mosaic "El Aire" at the Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Obras Públicas (SCOP). He became member of the Frente Nacional de Artes Plásticas (FNAP), and in 1954 of the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana. From 1983 to 1985 he was director of the "La Esmeralda".[3]
