Name History
The word 'Utulau consists of two words. These are 'utu (water pools) and lau (to talk about). According to legend, there was once a major drought in Tonga. Crops and plants were drying up and people had no water to drink. Except for one place,'Utulau. People were talking about pools of water that have been keeping 'Utulau the same way it was before and absolutely nothing was affected during the drought. At that time 'Utulau had no name for the village. When the Tu'i Tonga of that time heard of this, he went to visit the village. He was shocked at the fact that nothing had changed in the village. The people showed him to the pools of water that kept the village safe from the drought then he said, "Ko e ngaahi utu' 'eni 'oku 'lau'." which means "These are the pools they've been talking about". That is how the village got its name.
