Personal Life

Gurba was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In 2009 he was married to Franny Gurba of Jaded Hipster Choir. [4]

Career

Originally started rapping when he was fifteen with other groups he now has six albums of his own. The Joe was offered a recording deal with Universal but declined it in order to pursue his own style on the local Edmonton scene in hopes of make his own unique mark. After turning down the Universal record deal, he eventually went on to start his own label Old Ugly Recording Co. The first album that he recorded was classified as a Christian album and was The Proletariat LP, which won a Covenant Award shortly after its release for Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year.[5] The Joe does not consider himself as Christian rapper, but more of an alternative rap style.[6]

Old Ugly Recording Co

The Joe created Old Ugly Recording Co., an independent music label, in Edmonton, Alberta in June of 2009.[7] After declining a record deal offered to him by Universal Music he pursued a smaller record label in Edmonton, a scene in which he felt would be more beneficial to him. However after being turned away by Pop Echo, the smaller music label in Edmonton, The Joe was encouraged started his own. Old Ugly recording Co. started out as a collective project with a good group of friends who had different styles of music which appealed to the same audience. Functioning as a collaboration the group of friends are always looking out for each other’s success. [8] Old Ugly was modeled after similar small labels including, P.W. Elverum & Sun, that have a down home grass roots vibe. Flagship artists included Mikey Maybe, Mitchmatic, CBT, Teddy, and of course The Joe. Currently there are 18 artists under Old Ugly Recording Co. The notion of a collective does not stop at the members of the label. Old Ugly’s website shows that kind of unified community the Edmonton music scene has generated. The site has a section called, “Enemiez” with links to other local labels and a line at the top saying “and we think you should love them too”. The close relationship between the members of the label allows for a different kind of promotion. The members do promotional events such as circuses, and folk fires that make the marketing about friends, music and fun. Folk fires are and a bon fire and concert in the Edmonton river valley to promote Old Ugly musicians.

Style

Coming from a genre of hip-hop and alternative rap, The Joe defines his music as incorporating fiction, literary techniques and fake mythologies into characters and dramatization.[9] The Joe attempts to take rap into higher-minded directions and is currently working on more traditional beat rap music. "The Joe plans to reinvent himself on each album and envisions recording with a full-on indie pop band next time around." [10] “Gurba’s raps are impressive and his intelligence guides him to craft lyrics that twist and shift, forming progressive thoughts layered over sly beats. Not wanting to conform to any designated style, Gurba takes his influences from sources outside of hip hop; and this subsequently informs his creative process. He likes to play with the essence of rhythm and flow, straying away from straight forward ‘four elements’ rapping.”[11] His influences include Pigeon John, Edan, Busdriver, Aesop Rock, Camp Lo, The Microphones, Mount Eerie, Múm, Pier Giorgio Di Cicco, Rainer Marie Rilke, Will Smith, Ludacris, Napoleon Bonaparte, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Italo Calvino, Camilo José Cela, Annie Dillard, and Sean Nicholas Savage.[12]
