Steve Brill

Steve "Wildman" Brill is an American self-taught naturalist who is known for his experiences and knowledge on foraging wild plants, fruits, nuts, and mushrooms. He also gained much publicity surrounding his 1986 arrest for eating a dandelion picked from the New York Central Park. He gives city tours on foraging for wild foods, and is the author of 2 books. He is working on the Android version of his mobile app, which includes hundreds of photos and recipes.^[1]

Education

Steve Brill received his BA in Psychology at the George Washington University.^[2]

1986 arrest

Steve Brill was arrested on March 29, 1986, when two undercover park rangers who had infiltrated a New York Central Park tour handcuffed him for eating a dandelion. The undercover rangers had paid Brill $40 in marked bills, infiltrated his tour, and took pictures of him at work.^[3] The police fingerprinted Brill and charged him with criminal mischief for removing vegetation from the park, but Brill had eaten all the evidence, so they released him with a desk appearance ticket pending trial.^[4]
