Polikarpov I-6

Polikarpov I-6

The Polikarpov I-6 was a Soviet fighter prototype of the 1930s, designed by Polikarpov. It was a development of the Polikarpov I-3 with a lighter airframe. The result was a single-bay, unequal-span wooden biplane with fabric-skinned wings and a monocoque fuselage. I-6 made its first flight in March 1930, and two prototypes appeared in the May Day fly-past over Moscow in the same year. Compared to the Polikarpov I-5 also under development at the time, the I-6 had a higher top speed but worse climb and turn performance. In addition, it was armed only with two machine guns while I-5 was expected to be armed with four (this did not pan out in practice). As the result, the project was discontinued.cite book|author=Shavrov V.B.|year=1985|title=Istoriia konstruktskii samoletov v SSSR do 1938 g.
