Well, Vic, you have a very interesting story to tell about a low-budgetfilm which you made. Would you relate that to our audience?
:MORROW
Well, this is a short. It first came to me in terms of: afriend was doing a review of one of the nightclubs in town. And as part of thereview he wanted to do a short film--more or less of a
satire , a
take-off, of "New Wave" films that are comingfrom Europe, like "Last Year at Marienbad ". So he asked me if I woulddirect it. And I have aBolex camera (16), and I said sure. So we got thecast, and went out to Paradise Cove at Malibu. And wetook some film the first week. We only had two weeks before the show opened. We had photographer who didn't know too much, and nothing much came out. Wewent out the second weekend--now we only had a Saturday and a Sunday--and shot
600' on Saturday, [and] came back on Sunday. It was raining;we couldn't get back there; everything got fouled up; we shot 600' then. Weran out of film, and it had to be cut in like 48 hours--put together. No oneknew what we had.The show opened and Paul made a speech about: we are seriousfilmmakers, and this is our answer to European film making and New-Wavethinking. And the film came on, and I got a tremendous reaction. And it wasreviewed by "
The Hollywood Reporter " and they said it was fantastic. Andthe "Variety" said it was beautiful and all thisbusiness, which is kind of wild in itself. And then Arthur Knight [http://www.answers.com/topic/arthur-knight-director-actor-drama] [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0460807/] came down--who is a very respected filmcritic. He sawit, and he loved it. And he took it to an art house in town. And it played atthe Cinema Theater on Western [Avenue] it opened in ["unclear"] clips. Itgot wonderful reviews. And to boost business, I guess, after about four weeksthey brought in another film. And the film they brought in was "Last Year atMarienbad"!So this is kind of a wild story. The film was made for about $200 in 16 [mm] .And there is, of course, much more to it, but it was quite an experience.
