Samuel Barron was a United States Navy officer born in Hampton, Virginia in 1763 or 1765. He was the brother of James Barron also a US Navy officer. He received his early training from his father who had been an officer in the Virginia Navy during the American Revolutionary War. In 1798 Barron was placed in command of USS|Augusta|1799|2 and took part in the Quasi-War with France. During the First Barbary War he commanded USS|President|1800|2 and relieved Edward Preble near Tripoli. In 1805 he turned command of his squadron over to John Rodgers and returned to the United States due to poor health. There, he was assigned to command the Gosport Shipyard. Barron died on 29 October 1810.
