- What happens to food inside the digestive system
When you put food in your mouth, it goes through a long tube that runs from the mouth right through the body to the anus. The tube, and any other organs connected to it, are called the digestive system.
Food makes an amazing journey through the digestive system. During the journey, the food is broken down so that most of the nutrients are taken out of the food for the body to use. This process is called digestion. The nutrients are then small enough so that they can pass into your blood. This is called absorption.
