Gregory George Smith (also known by GG or G²) is an associate professor of mathematics at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.

Career

A native of Ontario, Smith obtained his B.Sc. (Honours) in Mathematical Physics from Queen's University in 1995, and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from University of California - Berkeley in 2001 (his advisor was David Eisenbud, and his thesis was titled Computational Methods for Studying Sheaves) [cite web |url=http://genealogy.impa.br/id.php?id=56790 |title=Gregory George Smith at the Mathematics Genealogy Project |accessdate=2008-10-11 |date=2008 ] .

Before undertaking a professorship at Queen's University, Smith spent three years pursuing post-doctoral research at Columbia University. Smith's main interests are algebraic geometry and computational commutative algebra.

Smith is an advocate of the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition which he wrote while completing his undergraduate degreeFact. In his first year doing so, he would also meet his future department colleague, Michael Andrew Roth.

Greg Smith is highly praised for his clarity and thoroughness as a lecturer. Smith has done a number of exchange programs and has given many lectures both in Canada and abroad. In particular, he will pursue a sabbatical semester at Berkeley in 2009.
