The "Summit Beacon" had been published since 1839 and the "Akron Evening Journal" had since 1897. In 1903 the "Beacon Journal" was purchased by Charles Landon Knight. His son
John S. Knight inherited the paper, in 1933, on Charles' death. The "Beacon Journal" under Knight was the original newspaper of Knight Newspaper Company.Andrea Mathewson is the president and publisher replacing Ed Moss.Alton Brown Jr. is the Exectutive Vice President/General Manager.

The McClatchy Company boughtKnight Ridder , the parent company of the "Beacon Journal", in June 2006 with intentions of selling 12 Knight Ridder newspapers. McClatchy sold the "Beacon Journal" to Black Press on August 2, 2006.Black Press is a
Canadian company that owns over 100 newspapers in westernNorth America , including theHonolulu Star-Bulletin . The "Beacon Journal" is the largest newspaper in the chain.Former Editors: Mark F. Ethridge, Jr., 1973-1976. Editor and Vice President.
