The importance of this amphitheater is that very February is the host venue of the Viña del Mar International Song Festival, one of the most important song and music festivals in Latin America. The venue is owned by the Viña del Mar Municipality.

History

After the sucess of the first Viña del Mar International Song Festival that took place in 1959, is was accorded to build an stage more stable that the (at the time) current one. In 1963 the arquitect Hernando López began the construction of the venue, which would be a wood structure that was like an ¨acoustic shell¨ that helped the artist to proyect the sound to the audience and to protect the artist from the rainy nights that happen on the city. Soon the amphitheater was an important part of the festival for it's meaning, giving a provincial air to the Festival.

In 2002 the Amphitheater was renovated, by building a concret structure. This structure is the one that is currently standing. With this renovation, the capacity of the Amphitheater was upgraded from 15,000 to 20,000 (which is the current capacity).
