Jack Cade laws

Jack Cade laws

Jack Cade was the leader of a coup against the King and Parliament in 1450 in London. In William Shakespeare’s version contained in Henry VI, he and "Dick the Butcher" were plotting how to achieve their murderous goals when Dick says;

"The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers." ["The second Part of Henry the Sixt", Project Gutenberg [http://www.gutenberg.org/dirs/etext00/0ws0210.txt] ]

Jack Cade laws can be generally described as statutes that protect wrongdoers from scrutiny so that they can "get away with murder".

The expression is also used in relation to laws that prevent or hinder lawyers from performing their public protection role in favour of the wider community. These include statutes that prevent lawyers speaking out on public issues, hobble the legal process in favour of government or impose excessive controls or regulations to achieve the same resultFact|date=October 2008.
