Philip J. Quigley is the retired chief executive officer of Pacific Telesis Corporation and a current director of
Wells Fargo & Company .A native of
San Francisco , Quigley received his BS degree in business fromCalifornia State University inLos Angeles . He began his career in the telecommunications industry withPacific Bell Directory in 1967. For five years he worked atAT&T headquarters inNew York City prior to divestiture in 1984. Later he served in turn as president and chief executive officer ofPacific Bell , chief operating officer of PacTel Corporation, and CEO of PacTel Personal Communications (i.e., cellular and paging).Quigley was elected CEO of Pacific Telesis on April 1, 1994. Upon the merger with
SBC in April 1997, he received the post of vice chairman. He retired in December 1997 to pursueventure capital and investment interests.Elected a director of
Wells Fargo & Company in 1994, Quigley is also a director ofNuance Communications , Siena Holdings, Thomas Weisel Partners Advisery Board, andSRI International . In addition, he has served as chairman of theCalifornia Chamber of Commerce and the California Business Roundtable and as a director of theUnited Way Board of the Bay Area.In the political realm, he has been a member of Bush-Cheney '04 and Dreier for Congress.
