Armagh railway station served Armagh in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. At the time of closure it was on the line from Portadown to Clones. Previously it had been the junction of this line and others to Newry and Castleblaney, but these lines were closed as they crossed the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Armagh rail disaster

The Armagh rail disaster happened on 12 June 1889 near the station. An excursion train had to negotiate a steep incline, but the train stalled. The crew decided to divide the train but when they did the rear portion had inadequate brake power and ran back down the gradient, colliding with a following train. Eighty-eight people were killed, most of them children, and 170 injured.

Other Armagh stations

Two other Armagh stations existed. The Castleblayney, Keady and Armagh Railway had its own Irish Street Halt from 1909 to 1932 and the Newry and Armagh Railway an even more ephemeral station, as that company's station only operated for a year or so in 1864 to 1865.

History

The station was on the Ulster Railway, which joined the Great Northern Railway (Ireland) and was later run by the Ulster Transport Authority. The line closed in 1957.
