- Hobbit hole
A hobbit hole has its origins with the bestselling children's book
The Hobbit byJ.R.R Tolkien . The Hobbit begins as follows:"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."
Hobbit holes were, of course, created as set pieces for the movie trilogyThe Lord of the Rings but they also exist as real life homes for regular sized people. [http://www.ourhobbithole.com] Hobbit holes have also been constructed at a true "hobbit scale" as play houses for children and/or as an architectural focal point in backyard landscaping. It is more accurate to say that a hobbit hole is a kind of earth sheltered home. What makes a hobbit hole distinct from all other such dwellings is the round porthole door, preferably with the knob in the exact middle. ---- Other Sources [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KFWoN-559I] Slide show of the Arizona Hobbit Hole under construction.
