- Eurocontinental champion
In professional wrestling, one who has held both the Intercontinental and European Championships simultaneously is consiered a Eurocontinental champion. Such a feat is only possible in the WWE, (World Wrestling Entertainment-the holder of both titles) and is unlikely to occur again since the conmpany's disbandment of the European title in 2002.A Eurocontinental champion can also be seen as distinction similar to that of a grandslam champion or triple crown winner.
Three wrestlers to date can call themselves former Eurocontinental champions. Many performers have held the Intercontinental and European championships on seperate occassions, however these performers are not considered former Eurocontinental champions, as they did not hold both titles at the same time.
Backgorund to Intercontinental and European championships
For years the Intercontinental championship has been seen as the steeping stone to the main event/world title. It is also considered the championship for wrestlers with mid card status, usually the upper midcard. When the European title was introduced in 1997, it was seen as the championship for athletes in the lower midcard. Usually as the stepping stone leading to the Intercontinenatal championship.
List of Eurocontinental champions
It should also be noted that
Rob Van Dam may also be arguably considered a Eurocontinetal champion, due to the fact that he won and unified the European championship with his already won Intercontinental championship.European title returning?
As mentioned above, with the European title being unified with the Intercontinental championship, it is unlikely that the European title will return. This even more unlikely due to the WWE's brand extesion, and the introduction of the second midcard title, the United States Championship
