History

----The first The Grand Mayan luxury resort opened in Riviera Maya in October of 2003. Soon after the luxury resort, The Grand Mayan, spread to other known Mexico beach destinations where Grupo Mayan had already been operating other brands. In October of 2004, The Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta and The Grand Mayan Acapulco open their doors to the public. Finally, The Grand Mayan Los Cabos begins operations in September of 2007.

In addition to the already existing properties, The Grand Mayan La Jolla de Cortes, aka The Grand Mayan Puerto Penasco, is scheduled for construction completion by the end of 2010.

The Grand Mayan Acapulco

----Inaugurated in October of 2004, The Grand Mayan Acapulco is located in Punta Diamante, Acapulco, Mexico. The Grand Mayan Acapulco features 354 units and is situated along a half mile of beach, five minutes from Acapulco International Airport and 20 minutes from the city's downtown.

The Grand Mayan Acapulco's facilities include an Albatross Golf Course. This course, named Copra Golf Course, is and 18-hole, par-72 golf course with clubhouse restaurant and pro shop. The Grand Mayan Acapulco also features a beach club frequently attended by Mexican celebrities. Architecture Behind The Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta

----The Grand Mayan was developed by Inmoviliaria Marina Vallarta and designed by AH Arquitectos. The firm takes a unique approach to incorporating natural elements in its designs to reflect the beauty of the surrounding environment , one of the primary reasons why they were chosen to design the structures at the Grand Mayan and other Mayan Resort complexes. The Mayan theme is reflected through the architecture and interior design of the structures. The contrast between historical regional influence and modern appeal classify the architecture as regional postmodern.

The Grand Mayan created the illusion of two pyramids by protruding a section of the structures by two feet and highlighting this protrusion with the use of earthy, natural tones in order to achieve this purpose and complement their lush, natural surroundings. This basically creates a “sticking out” effect on the pyramid within the building.

The Mayan theme can also be seen in the pool area, particularly in the small replica of the Chichen Itza pyramid with a water slide, which sits in the middle of the two large wave pools and serves as the location for the large engines necessary to produce the waves in those pools. The Chichen Itza pyramid is the most famous of the Mayan pyramids and is recognized by many people globally as the symbol of the Mayan culture.

Finally the Mayan theme is appreciated in the lobby entrance. The entrance foyer is about 1,000 square feet large and consists of 50 ft ceilings with eight 45 ft tall Mayan statutes lining the corridors. By the back wall of this room there is a small reflection pool and a line of lit candles on top of black marble.
