The character is Anglo-Indian born at the precise time of the independence of India, of extra-marital intercourse between William Methwold and Vanita, the wife of Wee Willie Winkie. The character is raised by a Muslim family after being exchanged at birth by Mary Pereira. Over the course of novel the character goes from riches to rags.
