Aashritha - The Helping hand Community is an independent, non-religious, non-political organization registered as a non-profit organization (Society # 238 of 2008) in India under Act No. 35 of 2001 for Registration of Welfare Society.

Aashritha was formed by a group of students at I.I.T Kanpur. The ideology of working towards the improvement of child education in rural areas of India cultivating moral values along with providing education to poor children brought them together and they formed Aashritha. Aashritha aims at providing moral support and care to financially under-privileged and physically challenged children, who have are niether encouraged nor nurtured well in the society.

Motive

Aashritha's prime motive is:"To provide financial and moral support to under privileged and physically challenged children for their education and thereby improve the educational standards in rural India with main focus on child education." To serve this motive Aashritha adopts and educate children who are not in a position to get education and are in turn drawn towards child labor. Members at Aashritha are driven by the motto to provide extreme care and education to these children and help them achieve their respective dreams in life. Aashritha visions a long term goal to open several residential schools across India to educate poor students by providing financial and moral support. Aashritha claims that they are not for simply facilitating the funds needed towards education, but to try and make sure that the funds are utilized in an effective and efficient manner.

Getting Started

A group of volunteers (educated and trained in Social Services) go to select villages and identify children who really need support for education. The coordinating members of Aashritha go through the shortlisted names, and selected children are supported for education (starting from the following academic year).

Projects/Cases

The first adoption : A seven year old girl, Divya, from a very small village, near Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, lost her parents to natural calamity. She now stays with her grandmother, who can not support her cost of education. Aashritha works for children like Divya. They create and maintain a database of such children, who are in a need of education and survival with care. Aashritha provides the support and all the required facilities needed for these children with the support from their committed members and volunteers.

The journey begins : More children were adopted and admitted to private schools to enable quality education.

Guru Project : Under the Guru project, Aashritha appointed personal tutors for each adopted child. The role of a Guru is to mentor and guide the children academically.

Pathshala Project : With the aim of improving the overall standard of education in rural India, Aashritha launched the 'Paathshala' program. Under this program, Aashritha decided to support schools where the basic level of infrastructure or facilities were missing. The basic aim of 'Paathshala' is to support a small elementary or government schools, there by impacting various student at once. Paathshala program was launched on 15th August 2008, celebrating the 61st Indian Independence Day.
