North Carolina Junior Classical League

The North Carolina Junior Classical League, or NCJCL, is a chapter of the [http://www.njcl.org NJCL] , an organization of secondary school students sponsored by the American Classical League. Its mission is "to encourage an interest in and an appreciation of the language, literature and culture of ancient Greece and Rome and to impart an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of classical antiquity." Its official colors are purple and gold.

North Carolina JCL sponsors three main events each year. Fall Forum, usually held in November, is comprised of general assemblies, a lecture by a visiting professor, Silly Olympika, as well as Mixed-Up Certamen. The Spring Certamen tournament, which usually takes place on the last weekend in March, is the qualifying tournament for the Competitive Certamen semifinals, which are held at the NCJCL State Convention, either in April or May. The two-day NCJCL State Convention is comprised of a skit contest, dancing, an essay writing competition, workshops for officers and candidates, academic testing, dramatic interpretations, English oratory, arts and crafts competitions, Silly Olympika, Open Certamen, as well as the semifinals and finals of Competitive Certamen.

Mixed-Up Certamen:

Mixed-Up Certamen is a quiz-bowl competition in which teams containing three or four students, each from different schools, answer questions about such topics as Roman history and life, Latin vocabulary and grammar, classical mythology, ancient geography, Latin mottoes and abbreviations, as well as some Hellenic (Greek-themed) questions. It is more relaxed than the Competitive Certamen events, usually held in March and April/May. The competitors from the top three teams of Mixed-Up Certamen, in each division, are awarded medals at the closing General Assembly.
