Born in 1827 [“Who was Who”1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] he was educated at Eton and Hertford College, Oxford. Ordained in 1858 he was appointed Curate of St Edmund's, Salisbury then Rector of Monkton Farleigh. Afterwards he was Vicar of Alvington [ [http://www.wissensdrang.com/stabb241.htm Some old Devon churches] ] followed by a 15 year spell in Totnes, firstly as Rural Dean and latterly as Archdeacon [ [http://library.georgetown.edu/dept/speccoll/earle.htm Papers of Alfred Earle] ] . After his brief service as a Bishop [The Times, Saturday, Feb 25, 1888; pg. 10; Issue 32318; col C "Consecration Of Suffragan Bishops"] he was Dean of Exeter until his death on 28 December 1918.
