Joseph Scott (merchant)

Joseph Scott (before 1749 – September 29 1800) was a merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia. He was a member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1759 to 1760.

Scott served as quartermaster in the 67th Foot and came to Halifax with Edward Cornwallis in 1749. He established himself as a merchant there, also operating a sawmill in Sackville. In 1752, he was named justice of the peace and judge in the Inferior Court of Common Pleas. Two years later, he was appointed lumber surveyor. He also served as paymaster for the garrison at Halifax from 1761 to 1763. Scott married Margaret Ramsey Cottnam in 1763. He died in Sackville.
