footnotes = Guachochi is a city in the south-western portion of the Mexican state of Chihuahua. It serves as the municipal seat for the surrounding municipality of the same name.

In the 2005 INEGI census, the city reported a total population of 12,385. Crime

As of recently, it has been turning into a hotspot for the Drug Cartels,predominantly by the Sinaloa Cartel.

October 4,2008A shootout occurred in Guachochi and as a result left four dead (Nicolas & Enrique Ceballos Cañez, Daniel "Iran" Miranda, Fourth body remaining unknown.) and four injured (Isidro Ceballos Cañez, Agustin Ortega Villalobos, Juan Carlos Moreno and Erasmo Ramirez Ramos.)Apparently two of the latter, due to the severity of their injuries, will be moved to Chihuahua, Chihuahua to receive urgent attention.

History

The settlement was originally founded by Jesuit missionaries in the mid-18th century. In 1952, Guachochi (then only a small village) was chosen as the location of one of the first two Indigenist Centres of the National Indigenist Institute (INI).

Media

Guachochi is home to XETAR-AM, a government-run community radio station that broadcasts to the local area in Spanish, Tarahumara and Tepehuano.
