footnotes =Peggy Mount OBE, (2 May 1915 - 13 November 2001), born Margaret Rose Mount, was an English actress of stage and screen. She is perhaps best known for playing a battle-axe character, though her real personality was said to have been far removed from such a role.
Peggy Mount was born in
Leigh-on-Sea ,Essex . Her love of acting had begun with the drama society of the Wesleyan chapel which she attended in Essex. She first worked as a secretary and took lessons from a drama tutor,Phyllis Reader , in her spare time. She progressed through amateur theatre and wartime concert party productions, and in 1944 played her first straight part, in "Hindle Wakes " at the Hippodrome,Keighley , before joining the Harry Hanson Court Players for three years, then working in repertory theatre inColchester ,Preston ,Dundee ,Wolverhampton andLiverpool .By the 1950s Mount was appearing professionally in the West End of London, where she shot to fame playing Emma Hornett in "Sailor Beware!" having originated the role at Worthing Rep. Later serious stage work include roles in
Shakespeare productions and she also appeared in the film of the musical "Oliver!" and in "Hotel Paradiso ".Peggy Mount starred in the films "Sailor Beware" in 1956 and "The Naked Truth" alongside Terry Thomas and Peter Sellars in 1957.
Peggy Mount is, however, best known for her numerous television comedy roles over three decades. Her first television role was the "
The Larkins " in 1958, a comedy series featuringDavid Kossoff and herself as a couple running a country public house. It was a big success and spawned the film spin-off, "Inn for Trouble " two years later. She followed this in 1966 with "George and the Dragon", alongsideSid James andJohn Le Mesurier . Between 1977 and 1981 she then starred in "You’re Only Young Twice ", as the forthright Flora Petty who bullied her friend Cissie Lupin (played byPat Coombs ). She also appeared in "Lollipop Loves Mr Mole ".After this period, Mount tended to play straight parts on television, in programmes such as 'The Trail of Klaus Barbie', 'Punishment Without Crime' and 'Inspector Morse' - in which she appeared as a formidable sister of mercy. She also provided one of the voices in 'The Princess and the Goblin', in 1991.
Later television appearances included a role in the "
Doctor Who " story "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy " in 1988.On the West End stage, Mount played numerous parts, including the nurse in 'Romeo and Juliet', Mrs Hardcastle in 'She Stoops to Conquer', Mrs Malaprop in 'The Rivals' and Lady Catherine in 'The Circle'.
She was made an Officer of the
Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1995. In later years she lost her sight and had suffered a series of strokes, ending her days inDenville Hall , the Actors' home in North London. She never married.References
