The Painted Man (known as The Warded Man in the United States) is a fantasy novel written by
Peter V Brett and published by Voyager Books in 2008. It is the first in a series called The Demon Trilogy.Plot
The world is plagued by
demons who live in the earth's core ("corelings") and rise at night to kill and feast on humanity. Protected only by fragile magical inscriptions ("wards") the last vestiges of humankind have been reduced to living in fear, scattered in distant villages at a medieval level of technology.Corelings
The demons in the book are held by legend to reside in the Earth's core and are associated with the elements. They have magical abilities such as rapid healing, enhanced strength, and poisonous talons. Although they all attack humans, they can attack each other, particularly corelings that are wounded.
