Joseph Pernette (
1728 –1807 ) [ [http://books.google.com/books?id=UAvyE0pN5akC&pg=PA313&lpg=PA313 Hamilton, William B "Place Names of Atlantic Canada", p.313] ] was a German-born merchant and political figure inNova Scotia . He represented Lunenburg County in theNova Scotia House of Assembly from 1761 to 1770.He was born in
Strasbourg and came to Nova Scotia withEdward Cornwallis in 1751. Pernette served as an aide-de-camp during the taking ofQuebec City [ [http://www.ourroots.ca/e/toc.aspx?id=878 Desbrisay, Mather B "The History of the County of Lunenburg" (1970) p. 137] ] . He first settled at Halifax but later moved to the New Dublin area. He built agristmill and asawmill on theLaHave River and also built the first ship on the river. Pernette served asjustice of the peace , deputy surveyor and was colonel in the local militia. He also conducted a census of the area and constructed a road to Lunenburg. Pernette also operated a ferry connecting that road to the road to Liverpool. He later retired to Halifax and was buried in St. Paul's churchyard there.His daughter Charlotte married Charles Morris [ [http://www.biographi.ca/009004-119.01-e.php?&id_nbr=2079 "Charles Morris" at the Canadian Dictionary of Biography] ] .
