RAF Barkway is one the smallest RAF stations in the UK, it is a Communications Station and is a small collection of buildings and a large radio mast [http://www.yannone.org/military-bases-Europe.html] [http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200304/cmhansrd/vo040105/text/40105w26.htm] .

History

It was originally opened as a monitor station on 22 June 1942 for the GEE (navigation) network in the Eastern area.

Current Use

The base is currently used by the United States Air Force (USAFE) [http://www.parliament.the-stationery-office.co.uk/pa/cm199495/cmhansrd/1995-07-12/Writtens-14.html] . It is believed to be part of the NATO/USAF/RAF early warning network [http://www.barkway-village.co.uk/landmarks.htm] .

In September 2008 The base was broken into by a Base Jumper who climbed the mast and then jumped off and deployed his parcahute [http://www.barkway-village.co.uk/news.htm] .
