Fallen Giants

Fallen Giants

"Fallen Giants" is a 2008 non-fiction book by two historians. The historians are Maurice Isserman and Stewart Weaver.

Book info

The book is about 250 years of Himalayan mountain climbing. The book tells about how modern mountain climbing evolved. The earliest climbers were Western that came in the service of the empire. The heights of the Himalayas was first reported by English survey teams that were sent out to map Britain's expanding influence in India. The peaks are usually higher than 2,600 feet. In earlier decades, Himalayan climbing was a bunch of failures.

Reception

Bruce Barcott, of The New York Times, reviewed the book saying, "Armchair mountaineers will give the book pride of place in their collections. A word, though: keep it on a low shelf, where boys and girls can discover it and start dreaming of their own expeditions." [http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/28/books/review/Barcott-t.html?ref=books]
