Batiar (also sometimes spelled as "baciar") was a popular Polish interbellum name of lower-class inhabitants of the city of
Lwow (now: Lviv,Ukraine ). A typical batiar was usually poor, but honest and generous and with great sense of humor. Among most famous batiars, there were such names as radio personalitiesKazimierz Wajda andHenryk Vogelfänger of theWeso%C5%82a Lwowska Fala radio show, as well as football starMichal Matyas , who played forPogon Lwow and the national team of Poland. Batiars spoke their distinctive dialect of the Polish language, which is calledBa%C5%82ak .The very word batiar is of Hungarian origin, where "betyar" means an impertinent, yet witty person.
