= History =

The story of the Fairmont Orchid resort begins hundreds of years ago on the sun drenched Kohala Coast in a region known as Kalahuipua’a. This is the birthplace of the Hawaiian King Kamehameha I, the king who conquered and united the Hawaiian Islands in the early 19th century. The history of this region is richly preserved in archeological sites, lava formations, and footpaths leading everywhere from burial sites to cave complexes. The first to develop this beautiful region was Francis Hyde I'i Brown, who is often referred to as the last chief; Brown was a descendent of a member of Kamehameha’s army and a superb statesman and athlete during the 1920’s. In 1972 Brown sold the resort to Mauna Lani Resort, and Kalahuipua'a was renamed Mauna Lani, which means “mountains reaching the heavens,” named in reverence to the five volcanic mountains that surround the Kohala region. In 1990 the resort was finished hosting 540 luxury guest rooms, a full service spa, a 10,000-square-foot pool, and many other world class features.

Rennovations

In 1996, $13 million was spent on renovations to the hotel. This resulted in the addition of Brown's Beach House and a beautiful private outdoor function area called Plantation Estate. In 2002 at beach front Kahakai Bar was unveiled along with the beach blub building. At this time the resort became a part of the elite Fairmont chain alongside famouse destinations as The Fairmont San Francisco and The Fairmont Banff Springs in Alberta, Canada. By the end of 2006 all guest rooms and public areas had been refurnished to bring more of the hawaiian beauty and spirit indoors through new carpets, wall coverings,paint, decor, and fixtures.

The resort also offers the award winning Spa Without Walls which offers 9 private waterfall huts,6 oceanside huts, and 3 indoor private treatment rooms. The atmosphere is said to be as much a part of the treatment as the treatment itself. Massages are not the only thing available, being a full service spa one can indulge in a facial, manicure and/or pedicure, hair removal, or any hair treatment needed.For those not interested in beauty during their stay there is plenty more to do. The resort offers a full service fitness center that offers yoga and personal training sessions along with their extensive collection of fitness machines.
