Sociologist (Basque Country, 1947)
Doctorate in Political Sciences from the Complutense University and PhD in Sociology from
Yale University . He was chair of "Estudios Españoles Príncipe de Asturias" inGeorgetown University ,Washington DC .At present he is professor of Sociology of the Department of Sociology and Analysis of Organizations at the
Universitat de Barcelona . He is representative for Spain on the committee of Social Sciences of the "European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research", at the Brussels European Commission. He is director of the sociological research group GRS at the University of Barcelona. He is a member of the "International Visual Sociology Asssociation ".He has been a lecturer at Georgetown and Berkeley Universities, and researcher at
Yale University ,Stanford University ,University of California (San Diego),University of Maryland ,University of Arizona ,University of Adelaide (Australia), andHosei University (Tokyo, Japan) among others. Researcher at the Council of Europe and the World Health Organization, and fellow of Rockefeller Foundation (Bellagio Center). His research work has received financial support from institutions such as TheFord Foundation , TheAmerican Council of Learned Societies , TheSocial Science Research Council , TheBritish Council , the French Government ,Fundación Juan March ,Comisión Fulbright ,Fundació La Caixa ,Fundación Argentaria andFundación Foessa .Spanish Representative for the COST programme of the European Union. For four years he was manager of the programme PSBS of the Spanish National Plan for R+D. He has been editor of "Social Science and Medicine", and has sat on the editorial board of "Health Promotion", "Health for All in Europe", and "Contemporary Sociology". He has served on the executive committee of European Society of Medical Sociologists, and the consulting committee for Medical Research in Europe for the WHO.
He spent three years as permanent advisor to the Minister of Health. He has been a member of the Experts Committee of Barcelona City Council, of the Barcelona Municipal Council for the Environment, and the General Council of Insalud.
Director of the series "Cuadernos Metodológicos". He formed part of the advisory board of the "Revista Española de Investigaciones Sociológicas", "Revista de Sanidad e Higiene", "Gaceta Sanitaria", "Current Anthropology", and "Policlínica". Technical advisor of the Research Commission of the "World Psychiatric Association". Since 1972 he has been a member of two research committees of the International Sociological Association - ISA.
He has published more than fifty books and nearly one hundred and fifty professional articles both in Spanish and English. Of particular interest among his more important publications are: "Sociology in Spain" (Sage 1979), "Políticas de población" (Fontanella 1985) which he wrote in collaboration with Juan Díez Nicolás, "El mito de la sociedad organizada" (Península 1991), "Estructura y cambio social en España" (Alianza Editorial 1998). He is co-author of the book "Excelencia: Calidad de las universidades españolas" (CIS 2001), and "Sociología Visual" (2002).
He has received ten national awards, among which are the
Premio Nacional de Investigación en Ciencias Sociales in 1982, two first prizes in the “Premio de Ensayo” of the Basque Country and the international award "Prince of Asturias Chair" in 1999.
