Shi'a in India

Shi'a in India

The population of Shia Muslims in India is around 30,900,000, or 10% of the Muslim population of the country; India is home to the third-largest Shi'a population in the world after Iran and Pakistan. While Twelver and Ismaili Shi'a figure largely in the Shi'a population, the Dawoodi Bohras are primarily based in India, even though the Dawoodi theology originated in Yemen.

A large number of Indian Shi'a are either immigrants or descendants of immigrants from Pakistan, where violence against Shi'a communities by the Sunni majority has persisted throughout history and has risen in frequency within Pakistan's recent history.

However, while Shi'a Muslims have found a refuge in India, which is a Hindu-majority but officially-secularist country, tensions between them and other religious groups, including Sunni and Hindu oppression, has resulted in the creation in recent years of Shi'a-specific organizations. Most recently, the AISPLB was forked from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board in 2005 to address the legal needs of the Shi'a population.
