History

Proir to 1951, fire protection for Groton Long Point was provided by the Noank Fire Department under an agreement whereby Noank was paid a retainer fee of $3,000 per year, plus $50 per hour when called to service. A 1922 Model T truck that held some firefighting equipment was kept on the Point and used to hold a fire until Noank arrived.

In 1950, the fee was increased to $5,000 and the hourly charge to $75. This was unacceptable to many in the point, so the Association membership voted to appropriate $40,000 to provide fire protection ---$20,000 for a pumper and the rest for a station. A formal meeting took place on May 20, 1951, "for the purpose of forming a volunteer fire company", and a vote to actually incorporate was passed on June 24, 1951. The first alarm was for a steak burning in a broiler on West Shore Avenue.
