Turquoise Mountain Foundation

Turquoise Mountain Foundation in Persian, The Firuz-Koh foundation is a non-governmental organization in Afghanistan, established by former British diplomat Rory Stewart. Based in Kabul it focuses on conserving parts of Kabul's old city as well as providing employment to locals by reviving trade in locally made handicrafts. The Turquoise Mountain Foundation was founded in 2006 by The Prince of Wales, Prince Charles of Britain and Hamid Karzai, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, [ [http://www.princeofwales.gov.uk/newsandgallery/focus/the_turquoise_mountain_foundation_becomes_the_prince_s_18th__917731594.html The Turquoise Mountain Foundation becomes The Prince's 18th charity] Retrieved 09-28-08] to help preserve some of Afghanistan’s rich architectural and cultural heritage for future generations.

Turquoise Mountain is working to regenerate Murad Khane, a district of Kabul’s old city. It has also established an Institute for Afghan Arts and Architecture in Kabul, which provides education for both men and women in traditional artisan skills, such as woodwork, calligraphy, ceramics and jewellery. In addition, it has a business development program which is working to revive Afghanistan’s traditional craft economy.
