wikify = September 2008The MAC SCANDAL occurred in Niterói in 1996, when the mayor in that time, João Sampaio, inaugurated the MAC, ( the Museum of Contemporaneum Art of Niterói, project of the architect Oscar Niemeyer ).

History

The MAC is located in Boa Viagem in a hill slope, that had locked construction rights by the city council. When inaugurated, MAC would make the nearbly areas increase in a gigantic amount of value, the problem was that the construction rigths there were locked, in December 1996 almost in Christmas, the new mayor, Jorge Roberto Silveira sent to the city council a project to unlock the rigths of construction in that area, giving permission to build there buildings up to 40 meters, the project was accepted in at least two days. Who the city council do not knew, was that days before, Zeca Mocarzel, sub-mayor of the Niterói's oceanic region (of Jorge Roberto Silveira's government) bought the lands in very low prices, allegating to the old owner that, that region was locked and nothing could be done there, so he bought the region and sold later the land for more than 5 million or Reais, aproxx. 1,250 million of dollars in that time ( 2,720,000 dollars today ).

Oddities

Because the scandal occurred almost in Christmas, the people of Niterói says that was Jorge Roberto Silveira, Zeca Mocarzel and João Sampaio's ( Tradditional Niterói's politicians ) Christmas present.
