Raja Makutam

Raja Makutam

Synopsis

B.N.Reddy is one of the most prolific filmmakers of Telugu cinema during the 1950s. He is also the director of the critically acclaimed Malleswari. This particular film is the readaptation of Hamlet. A lot of important moments in the plot have been changed though. To start with, the movie cannot be classified as a tragedy.

Things like the queen marrying the king's murderer are removed. you must understand that such things are simple undigestable to the Indian viewer. So, after the king's murder by his prime minister, the queen and the prince form a team. The politics inside the fortress and the tensions between the lead characters are superbly shown. N.T.R is superb as the prince Pratap. Kannamba gives a fantastic potrayal as the queen, Gummadi in a memorable role as the shrewd and scheming prime minister and Padmanabham as mentally challenged son of the prime minister. Raja makutam means the King's sceptre.

The character of Ophelia is not found in this movie. The love-interest of the prince is a village belle who has been victimised by the cruel politics of the state. She is beautifully etched by the actress Rajasulochana. This movie belongs to the folklore genre and is swashbuckling and deeply intense alternatively.
