Gavril Stefanović Venclović

Gavril Stefanović Venclović ( c. 1680 - c. 1749) was Serbian poet, writer, enlightener, orator and painter of church icons.

Biography

Gavril was born in Srem province , then Hungarian kingdom, now Serbia. There are little informations about his childhood. In AD 1690 he was refugee from Turkish army in Sentandrea,Hungary where he become a disciple of mitropolite Kiprian Račanin.The first school was in monastery of St.Lucas. Gavril had especialy skills as a poet and painter.Also, he wrote and collect songs, wrote hagiographies of Serbian saints. About 1711-1715 AD Venclovic finished school and went to Gyur, when he become the priest in local church of St. Nicolas.

Work

Gavril Stefanovic Venclovic's opus was interesting and multifarious. Orations, biographies, church songs, poems,illuminate and illustrate of church books, histories of european peoples and kings,etc.The most famous works are:

*History of Peter The Great, Russian tsar
*Shaykash's orations
*The spiritual sword

Legacy

Gavril was important for reformation of Slavonic Cyrilic script. He had reformed the letters "k" and "g" for Serbian sounds /tɕ/ and /dʑ/.
