Yukiya Amano (天野之弥 "Amano Yukiya",
May 9 1946 - ) is aJapanese diplomat and international civil servant for theUnited Nations and its subdivitions. He is currently the ambassador and resident representative from Japan for theInternational Atomic Energy Agency .Bio
Amano was born in
Kanagawa Prefecture , Japan on May 9, 1946. He enteredTokyo University in 1968 and passed the examination for first-class foreign services during the college years. After gradated from the Faculty of Law, He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1972. In the ministry he is specialized in the international disarmament issue and nuclear nonproliferation efforts.He held posts in the ministry such as the Director of the Science Division, Director of the Nuclear Energy Division in 1993. He was appointed Director-General for Arms Control and Scientific Affairs in August 2002 and Director-General of the Disarmament, Nonproliferation and Science Department in August 2004.
He has served in the Embassies of Japan in
Vientiane ,Washington andBrussels , in the Delegation of Japan to theConference on Disarmament inGeneva and wasConsul General of Japan inMarseille in 1997.He also has been involved in the international negotiation such as the
NPT extension, theCTBT , theBTWC verification protocol, the amendment of theCCW and theICOC . He represented Japan as a Governmental Expert on the UN Panel on Missiles in April 2001 and in the UN Expert Group on Disarmament and Nonproliferation Education in July 2001. He headed the Japanese delegation on the IAEA's 35-nation board of governors and was chairman of the policy-making body in 2005-06.On September 2008, Japanese government announced that it nominated Amano to the next Director General of the IAEA.
