Built in 1897 for a wealthy older lady Harriet Sturridge, Bar lodge is a stunning house situated on the South West Coastal path near Sharpitor. Close to the Salcombe Town Centre the house directly overlooks the “Bar” a sand bar across Salcombe Harbour.
Poet Laurel Lord Alfred Tennyson’s most famous poem “Crossing the Bar” is said to have been inspired by the Salcombe Bar following a rough passage over the into Salcombe Harbour in the yacht Sunbeam, whilst staying with the historian J. A. Froude.
The Bar claimed the lives of thirteen of the fifteen man Lifeboat crew of the William and Emma whilst trying to navigate turbulent seas at the Bar during a storm in 1916. Bar Lodge is now rented to the public.
