Gospel of Basilides

Gospel of Basilides

The Gospel of Basilides is a lost text from the New Testament apocrypha by Basilides mentioned by Origen [Homilies on Luke 1.1] , Jerome, Ambrose [Expositio, Euangelii, Lucae i.2] , Philip of Side, and Venerable Bede [In Lucae Euangelium Expositio I] . It is composed in Egypt c. 120-140. In all likelihood, this gospel was compiled out of canonical gospels, the text being curtailed and altered to suit his Gnostic tenets, a diatessaron on Gnostic("Docetic") lines.
