The Alligator 90-100 FM

The Alligator 90-100 FM

The Alligator 90FM (later re-named The Alligator 90-100FM), was a radio station broadcasting in Hawke's Bay New Zealand from 1994 to 1998. The station initially went to air on 90.3 FM via temporary studio's on Station Street Napier, before relocating to a new building on the corner of Carlyle and Craven Street's Napier. The Alligator ran an AC Adult format filling a hole in the market at the time. Positioning statements included "Better Music Variety and Less Talking", and "The Original FM Music Station for Adults".

The station's first Programme Director was Andrew Jefferies - he also hosted Breakfast. Other announcers included James Milner, Virgil Troy, Julie-Ann Barnes, and Station Manager Graeme Parsonage. Later, Mark Bramley would join the on air line-up.

The studio's were equiped with Digilink automation, and TrakStar production software. The station's on air sound was created via a Unity 200i from Cutting Edge.

Within months of the station's launch, a second transmitter was installed on Bluff Hill and relayed the programme to Napier Hill and Port residents on 99.9 FM. The station re-named to "The Alligator 90-100FM" at this time. (99.9FM has now been relocated to Mount Threeve where it broadcast's Radio Hauraki from The Radio Network's Napier studio's).

Sadly, The Alligator eventually struck financial hard times and was sold. The station was replaced with a satellite fed programme via Hamilton and re-branded to 'Easy Listening i90'. The 99.9 frequency would split to broadcast a new programme for youth - 'Xtreme 100' was born. These station's would continue to broadcast for some years before they were bought by The Radio Network. 90.3 now carries the Easy Mix format, while 99.9 carries Radio Hauraki.
